What is Vaginal Atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy is a normal part of aging, as estrogen levels drop in the vaginal wall, the vaginal environment changes:
- the vaginal lining becomes thinner
- the vagina becomes less acidic which can lead to a change in the type of bacteria found there.
Vaginal atrophy can be associated with the following symptoms :
- loss of lubrication during sex.
- pain during sex
- bleeding after sex
- vaginal dryness, itchiness or clear discharge.
Symptoms are quite common with up to 55% of women reporting vaginal dryness and 41% experiencing pain during sex.
Symptoms can occur in patients as they approach menopause, or long after the resolution of the other symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flushes. In some women vaginal atrophy will become more severe as they age. Women who smoke may be at higher risk.
